Sahitya

Sahitya encompasses a wide range of written works, specifically those recognized as an art form, such as novels, plays, and poems, whether in print or digital form. Notable examples of Sanskrit literature include the poems and plays of Kalidasa, the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata (including the Bhagavad-gita), and the Upanishads, showcasing the richness of Sanskrit literary heritage.

The origins of Sanskrit literature can be traced back to the creation of the Vedas, which have provided a wealth of literary knowledge for future generations. While the language used in the Vedas differs from that found in poetry and drama, classical Sanskrit literature gained popularity in the realms of poetry and dance dramas.

The blending of different drama genres with Sanskrit resulted in a unique combination, leading to a treasure trove of Sanskrit dramas and plays. Notable dramatists of Sanskrit literature, such as Kalidasa, Bhasa, Shudraka, and Asvaghosa, have gifted us with a myriad of famous Sanskrit plays.

Sanskrit poetry represents a vast repository of knowledge, offering profound insights into ancient thoughts and principles. Some of the most outstanding works in ancient Sanskrit literature are in the form of Sanskrit poems, enriching us with the poetic wealth of Sanskrit.

India is renowned for its famous mythologies and folklore, housing some of the greatest works of ancient classical literature. The Ramayana and Mahabharata, written in ancient Sanskrit, stand as the epitome of epic literature in India, embodying the most common ideals of human civilization that appear to have dwindled in modern times.

Sanskrit has deep roots in our culture and is further elevated by renowned Sanskrit writers who crafted masterpieces in classical Sanskrit, thereby securing the language a prestigious place in India’s cultural heritage. Indian Sanskrit poets are integral and inseparable from the historical and cultural legacy of our country.

In the Sahitya department, we have the dedicated service of two well-qualified and consistent Assistant Professors since the inception.
